Program Overview

Transfiguration School, along with the Archdiocese of New York and New York State, uses the New York State Common Core Standards English Language Arts and Literacy (including literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects) as well as Mathematics.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the work force. The standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world, and provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. The Common Core State Standards focus on core conceptual understandings and procedures starting in the early grades, thus enabling teachers to take the time needed to teach fundamental concepts and procedures well and to give students the opportunity to master them.

Grades K-3 Curriculum

English Language Arts (ELA)

The Reading Workshop model structures the ELA block. This model allows for a balanced approach of literacy including whole class instruction through read alouds and mini lessons, shared reading, independent reading time, teachers working with small groups, students working at literacy centers, and ending with sharing and reflection time. This model allows time for teachers to differentiate and meet all students’ needs by working with students one-on-one or in small group settings. The Reading Workshop model creates real life reading experiences for students and it allows time for them to be “real readers”. It also provides time for students to build stamina, which is an important skill needed for sustained reading as well as for taking standardized assessments. Independent reading time allows students to transfer skills modeled by the teacher during the read aloud and mini lesson to the book they are reading independently. To be strong and successful readers, students read more frequently for extended periods of time. To accomplish this, teachers build classroom libraries that motivate students to read and choose books that they love, using the Five Finger Rule and leveled bins. The Reading Workshop model motivates students to develop a love for reading and to become lifelong readers, while meeting the needs of all learners.

Mathematics

Computational fluency and conceptual clarity are emphasized in the mathematics program. Students learn to think logically and are encouraged to explain their thoughts orally and in writing. Manipulatives are used to make Math a practical learning experience.

Social Studies

In the primary grades learners explore the self, the family and the community. Students acquire a deeper understanding of the concept of community as they examine theirs and other communities as well as the historical, geographic, social and economic components of larger communities.

Science

The Science program is activity based. Students complete projects that explore focus questions in each grade. Simple experiments reinforce observational and analytical skills, scientific knowledge and discovery.

Mandarin

Mandarin is taught to students in grades K-8. Students learn the language through listening, storytelling, singing, reading and repetition.

After School Program

The Transfiguration After School Program is available to students in 1 through 8. Primarily teachers from Transfiguration School who provide individualized instruction and assistance in homework staff it. After school begins at 3:00 pm and ends at 6:00 pm five days a week.

Enrichment Electives are available once a week between 3:00-3:45 pm.

Session I begins in September and ends in January.
Session II begins in January and ends in June.

We are now accepting applications for After School for academic year 2016-2017 which starts in September.
