Transfiguration School, along with the Archdiocese of New York and New York State, uses the New York State Common Core Standards English Language Arts and Literacy (including literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects) as well as Mathematics.
The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The standards were developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the work force. The standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world, and provide teachers and parents with a common understanding of what students are expected to learn. The Common Core State Standards focus on core conceptual understandings and procedures starting in the early grades, thus enabling teachers to take the time needed to teach fundamental concepts and procedures well and to give students the opportunity to master them.
Grades 4-8 Curriculum
Students transition to the Upper Campus located at 37 St. James Place when they complete third grade. This physical transition to another site corresponds to their own personal transition from childhood to early adolescence.
The curriculum at this level is more rigorous and challenging. The expectation is that students develop greater responsibility and independence as they mature. Adherence to routines and the acquisition of time management skills are important as students transition between classes and learn to prioritize their responsibilities.
Technology is an integral part of the curriculum at the Upper Campus through the consistent use of Chromebooks and Google applications for education.
English Language Arts (ELA)
The Language Arts program is literature based and comprises the study of the following literary genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, plays and short stories. Writing is integral to the Language Arts program. Students engage in the following forms of writing: personal, narrative, persuasive and descriptive. The writing process is applied in each form of writing. Vocabulary and grammar are addressed in reading and writing.
The Mathematics program emphasizes computational skills, conceptual understanding and problem solving. Students work independently and in small groups and are required to present oral and/or written justifications for their strategies and solutions. Students in grades 6-8 receive accelerated math instruction. Eighth graders prepare for the Common Core Algebra I examination; a ninth grade Regents course.
The Social Studies program encourages students to make reasoned and informed decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society. Students acquire the knowledge skills, understandings and values necessary to function in American Society.
The focus in each grade is:
Grade 4: New York History and Government
Grade 5: History of the United States, Canada and Latin America
Grade 6: The Eastern Hemisphere
Grade 7/8: United States and New York State History
The Science program integrates life science, physical science and earth science. Students learn about the natural world through exploration and experimentation. They make predictions, ask questions, observe and collect information, draw conclusions and communicate their results orally and in writing.
The Religion program emphasizes the basic teachings of the Catholic Faith. Students attend prayer services and school masses and participate in activities throughout the year that reinforce Gospel values.

Grade 8: Church History & Morality
Mandarin is taught to students in grades 4-8. Students learn the language through listening, storytelling, singing, reading and repetition.
After School Program
The Transfiguration After School Program is available to students in 1 through 8. Primarily teachers from Transfiguration School who provide individualized instruction and assistance in homework staff it. After school begins at 3:00 pm and ends at 6:00 pm five days a week.
Enrichment Electives are available once a week between 3:00-3:45 pm.

- Computer Coding
Session I begins in September and ends in January.
Session II begins in January and ends in June.
We are now accepting applications for After School for academic year 2016-2017 which starts in September.
